The area around the old Orlando Jai-Alai fronton along U.S. Highway 17-92 in Fern Park is not one of Seminole County’s prettiest spots.
The sidewalks along Fernwood Boulevard and Oxford Road are cracked and uneven. The landscaping is covered with weeds and littered with old liquor bottles, empty beer cans and other trash. Homeless residents often spend nights in nearby woods.
It’s an area that county officials have long wanted to see redeveloped into a vibrant urban community filled with apartment buildings, shops, restaurants and offices.
